On course to get it right

NEW courses at Darlington College are aiming to ensure businesses are not in for a shock when it comes to electrics.

Starting in mid-March, the sessions will give electricians all the know-how they need on crucial new requirements affecting their work which are due to come into force later this year.

The criteria of the 17th edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations will have to be met on every piece of electrical work which is undertaken from July 1.

The regulations impact on everything from basic work carried out in the home and under-floor heating to major electrical installations at venues like exhibition halls and amusement parks.

The latest revisions to the regulations were devised to take into account ever-changing technologies and new products being made available.

Darlington College will be running four update courses for electricians up to the end of April and there are also plans for a full course to be made available.

Steve Richardson, assistant director for technology, said: "The Wiring Regulations are the industry bible and there are some crucially important developments that need to be taken into account.

“Our courses will address those and make sure everyone is aware of what is involved," he said.
