Eco blow for Teesside
Teesside was rueing a missed opportunity today, as the government snubbed its renewable energy capability by excluding it from a list of proposed new ‘eco-towns’.
The scheme for a series of low-carbon, environmentally friendly towns has won backing from some quarters for its potential to deliver affordable and ‘green’ housing.
But despite recent projects which suggest Teesside is well-equipped to become a leading centre for energy-efficiency, the area will not be a pilot for the new scheme.
Last month Hexham-based Econnect won a contract to complete a feasibility study on connecting renewable energy technologies to the electricity national grid network, which could free the way for community generation schemes to connect to the grid without the need for expensive cable upgrades or digging up roads.
Under the eco-town initiative, the shortlist of 15 towns will be whittled down to up to 10 over the next six months, with successful bidders having to demonstrate they can create zero carbon homes.
