Yarm firm’s Tall Ships win

HARTLEPOOL’S involvement in The Tall Ships Races’ 2010 event is already driving new business for Teesside.

Tall Ships will sail into Hartlepool in 2010 bringing prestige, visitors from across the globe and millions of pounds to the region. Between 100 and 125 tall ships are expected to take part in the race which is due to end in the North-east.

Already 130 firms have shown an interest in a contract to produce design and marketing material for the event.

Forty-six companies eventually submitted bids for the work and after a shortlist was drawn up, the contract was awarded to Yarm-based RDW Advertising.

The contract is initially for 12 months but with an option to extend it for a further two 12 month periods.

Jo Cole, Hartlepool Council’s tourism officer, a member of the panel who selected RDW, said: “We had an overwhelming response and the standard of bids received was exceptional.

“Choosing an agency to work with was not an easy decision to reach because we were not just looking for creative design, we wanted a company who fully understood the wider benefits of what Hartlepool and the Tees Valley has to offer as a tourist destination and the long-term benefits from The Tall Ships’ Races in 2010.”

Tall Ships will arrive in Hartlepool after they have sailed from Kristiansand in Norway on the final leg of the race. It’s predicted the spectacle could attract as many as a million visitors to the town.

Carol Huitson, director with RDW Advertising, said: “We are delighted to have won such a fiercely competitive tender. As a Tees Valley company, it’s great to know that our commercial insight, creative work and operating costs are competitive on a regional and national level.”
