Bridge works a model of engineering
A DARLINGTON firm of design engineers has been jointly nominated for a top award following its ground- breaking work on the Surtees Bridge over the River Tees.
In a £17.5m project led by the Highways Agency, the two-lane bridge was replaced with a wider three-lane crossing, using innovative techniques hailed by civil engineers as a model for others to follow.
Opened in January 2008, the bridge works, completed with minimum disruption to road and river users, employed more than 80 North-east based staff during construction and several local firms to supply specialist kit.
Middlesbrough-based Sarens Construction used one of the biggest cranes in Europe to lift the giant bridge sections, while Cleveland Bridge company, based in Darlington, fabricated and erected the massive steel supports.
“It was good news for the North-east,” said Rob Sanger, site agent for lead contractors Edumund Nuttall.
On Thursday, designers at Darlington’s A-One along with contractors Edmund Nuttall and the Highways Agency will hear if they have won a coveted Robert Stephenson Award from the Instituion of Civil Engineers for their efforts.
