Wind farm objections will push up price of electricity

PUBLIC objection to wind farms on land will push up the unit price of electricity, an advisor warned.

The additional cost of building off shore, which saw the cost of the now stalled London Array project - the largest in the world - rise to £2.5bn, would be reflected in household bills, said Dr Richard Court, technology specialist in wind renewables at R&D group NaRec.

“The UK is going for offshore wind because people tend to object to wind turbines on land.

“Putting turbines in the sea near major population centres is perhaps the only way it can be done.

“But people must understand, it does mean electricity is going to be a lot more expensive.”
