Creative mentors plea

MIDDLESBROUGH-based DigitalCity’s bid to lock in local talent by offering substantial sweeteners to upcoming businesses in creative media is being strengthened with an appeal for more mentors.

The Institute of Digital Innovation, which recently secured £5m funding to deliver DigitalCity Fellowships over the next three years, works with around 40 mentors who coach fellows on creative and technical projects.

Past mentors have included Bob the Builder creator, Curtis Jobling, and acclaimed music video director Richard Fenwick.

Each provides one-to-one support to graduates working in industries such as video games design, photography, mobile technologies and medical projects, helping produce work to industry standard, develop existing skills and take their ideas to market.

The fellowship scheme, funded by regional development agency One Northeast and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), provides financial support and world class facilities at the new Boho Zone.

Scott Watson, enterprise co-ordinator for DigitalCity, said the mentoring support was a popular part of the fellowship programme.

“We are keen to hear from anyone, in any area of the UK, with the expertise to mentor the development of new ideas for research or business.”
