Firm digs deeper

A GROUND investigation company is sinking £70,000 of public money into a new green energy market and almost doubling its workforce.

Geocore Site Investigations, based in Redcar, which provides drilling services and ground condition assessments, is to set up a division installing ground heat pumps for business. Geothermal heating, which uses the earth to warm pipes through which liquid is pumped and returned to the surface for heat extraction, is already a popular form of domestic energy in Germany.

The Selective Finance for Investment grant from One NorthEast will swell Geocore’s 18-strong workforce to 34 and allow it to create four geology graduate positions.

MD Adam Woodhead said geothermal heating was a growing market. “The system has a reduced impact on the environment and is more economical to run than most fossil fuel heating. It is therefore crucial to companies at a time when they need to consider rising energy prices and the need to reduce their carbon footprint.”

Ken Samson, business finance manager at One NorthEast, said the agency had a responsibility to show businesses how they could cut costs and limit their environmental impact.
