Work begins on £15m college in Stockton

WORK on a new £15m state-of-the-art sixth form college and sports centre in Stockton is officially under way.

The principal of the new college, Sujinder Sangha, and _space’s lead architect on the project, Richard Howe turned over the first sod to launch the project.

The three storey, 5,000sq m sixth form building is triangular in design and a sports centre is centrally located in the college’s sports field. It will offer the best of a specialist sixth form college in Billingham and a Beacon further education college serving the whole of Stockton.

_Space’s managing director of architecture, Andy Roberts said: “The building is unusual for several reasons; it will be triangular in plan and the college will have almost no corridors as circulation will be via balconies or bridges around the two triangular atria.

“These two atria will essentially be the lungs of the building, allowing fresh air to be circulated and therefore allowing creative learning and ideas to flow.”
