Riding a wave of opportunity

INSPIRED by his success in the Gazette-backed entrepreneurs challenge, If We Can, You Can, Saltburn’s Nathan Robinson revealed he was planning to take his business into uncharted waters.

The 24-year-old, whose passion for surfing led him to open Barclay Elsdon Lettings Agency in the seaside town so he could achieve a “better work/life balance”, said he was in discussions with several firms over a new venture that would add value to his business. He said the credit crunch had brought him an unexpected bonus at both ends of the lettings market.

“I’ve seen a lot of couples moving in together for the first time who can’t get a mortgage. At the same time, there are a lot of people who are committed to buying another property and they aren’t holding back. Rather than lose the one they want, they’ll get a bridging loan, and let theirs for a few months.”

As a result there were a lot of premium properties on the market at more affordable rentals and demand was strong.

“Most properties only stay on our books for three to four weeks,” said Mr Robinson.

A steady stream of workers moving into the area boosted the rented sector, he said.

“The North-east is still one of the cheaper places to live in the UK, but one of the biggest areas for processing jobs.”

Voting in the If We Can, You Can challenge ends on Monday.
