Honour for Corus boss

PHILIPPE Varin, the chief executive of Corus, has been awarded an Honourary CBE for Services to the UK Steel Industry.

In a ceremony at Lancaster House this week, the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, John Hutton, presented Mr Varin with the award and paid tribute to his 30-year career in the metals industry.

A board member of Tata Steel - which acquired Corus in April 2007 - Mr Varin acknowledged the contribution of Tata’s deputy chairman, Jim Leng, “without whom the recent history of Corus would no doubt have been very different.”

He said: “I want to share this award with the team represented here today ... with the Board, with the Executive team, with our advisers, with the workforce and our unions.”

Previously Mr Varin worked for Pechiney, where he was senior executive vice-president of the aluminum sector and a member of the company’s executive committee. In May 2003 he moved to Corus, one of the world’s largest steel producers with annual revenues of over £10bn.
