TEES Valley companies are set to benefit from a huge increase in the number of wind turbines across the UK as part of a “radical” £100bn blueprint unveiled today to boost renewable energy supplies.
Local manufacturers and renewable energy specialists including Siemens and Middlesbrough-based TWI (The Welding Institute) Technology Centre North East, could capitalise on plans to build up the UK’s clean power supply.
Ministers are expected to say that radical steps are needed to diversify energy supplies if the Government is to reach its EU-imposed target of producing 15% of the country’s energy from renewable sources.
Up to half of the target will have to come from electricity, meaning a third will have to be generated from renewables by 2020.
This will call for a massive wind energy building programme.
