Domain name change proposals welcomed

A PROPOSED shake-up of the web could prove a good move for business, a Tees Valley expert said today.

IT company Infoserve, which has a base in Darlington, said plans to relax strict rules on so-called top level domain names, such as .com or .uk - being considered by regulators today - would avoid online confusion.

Steve Barnes, chief executive, said: “Anything that simplifies things and improves recognition has to be a good thing. It can be very frustrating not being able to put your company name in your domain and this would open up more opportunities.”

The comments came as Leeds-based Infoserve said it was continuing to expand its Tees Valley operations. Currently employing about 120, Mr Barnes said there was potential to recruit another 150 in Darlington.

Today Infoserve said it had cut annual losses from £3.2m to £2.89m. Revenue increased by a quarter in the past 12 months and the company was expected to move into the black in the second half of the financial year.

In May 2007, Infoserve became the official Yahoo! Local advertising sales partner for the UK, giving it exclusive rights to sell up to four featured listings to small and medium sized firms on each page of Yahoo! Local.

And earlier this year it clinched a significant contract with Google and became one of only two companies in Europe to be appointed an Authorised Reseller of Google AdWords.

Mr Barnes added: “We’ve put a lot more emphasis on training and development of staff and performance per sales executive has increased by 46%.”
