OUTDOOR clothing specialists J Barbour & Sons has been recognised as one of the Ones to Watch in a prestigious league table of fast-growing companies.
Dame Margaret Barbour, chairwoman of the iconic South Tyneside countrywear brand which is now sold in 29 countries, was presented with a special commendation at the Sunday Times PricewaterhouseCoopers Profit Track 100 awards in London.
She said: “We are delighted to receive the Ones to Watch special commendation award. It recognises the hard work and contribution that the whole company has made in consistently moving the business forward and making the brand salient to a younger generation while remaining true to our heritage and further securing the future for Barbour as a North East business.”
The fourth-generation family-owned business was recognised after boosting its sales in the UK in addition to increasing exports to countries such as Germany, Italy, Spain, the US and Japan.
The brand has concentrated on attracting younger customers by expanding its range from traditional waxed jackets to include lifestyle clothing such as shorter, fitted jackets and breathable waterproofs.
It also produces shirts, trousers, knitwear and accessories.
