Building on skills

NOT enough is being done to overcome the shortage of skilled staff in the construction industry, according to a new report.

KPMG’s 2008 Global Construction Survey says the single biggest priority for contractors is to overcome the chronic skills shortages that have plagued the industry for years.

The majority of respondents believe the industry is not doing enough to tackle the issue, although two-thirds think their own company is on track with its recruitment processes.

Fiona Longley, senior property tax manager at KPMG in Newcastle, said: “It is surprising that the industry believes that individually they are doing enough, but as a whole it is deficient.

“Surely it is time for some collective action, starting with a fresh approach to recruiting in order to attract the best graduates in a very challenging global environment.”
