£4.5m revamp for hotel
MULTI-MILLION pound redevelopment plans have been announced for a Teesside seafront hotel.
Owners of The Staincliffe Hotel in Seaton Carew aim to replace the existing building with an iconic 25-bedroom hotel and apartment development - costing £4.5m.
It is hoped the project will be completed in time for the Tall Ships visit to Hartlepool in August 2010.
The hotel was originally built in 1869 as a home for wealthy West Hartlepool merchant Thomas Walker and was converted in the 1920s.
But a full building condition survey to establish the state of the existing building has concluded repairs, alterations and improvements needed to continue The Staincliffe would cost more than £2.5m.
Staincliffe owner Mark Jones said: “Replacing the old Staincliffe with a new hotel is the only real option.”
Hotel owners have commissioned Stokesley-based DKS Architects to provide redevelopment plans for the site.
The proposal includes the 25-bedroom hotel - bigger than the site’s current 20 rooms - and a restaurant, along with a separate apartment complex comprising 18 two bedroom units and 19 one bedroom units and car-parking for approximately 96 vehicles.
The Staincliffe Hotel was put up for sale at the end of last year to secure investment for redevelopment. A spokesman said the hotel was now off the market and this new project would be funded through private investment and the sale of apartments at the site.
A planning application is set to be made to Hartlepool Council within the next few weeks.
Mr Jones added: “Our aim is to provide an iconic building that is fit for purpose for the 21st century and one that will provide quality accommodation for the increasing numbers of visitors who come to Hartlepool every year.
“We are passionate about the regeneration of Hartlepool and I am confident that what is planned represents a positive addition to Seaton Carew.”
An exhibition event about the proposals will take place at The Staincliffe on Thursday, July 17, from 3-7pm.
