Focus is still set on career in hand

PEOPLE in the region are not looking to make radical career changes, an nebusiness poll has revealed.

Earlier this month, the Building Trade Skills Centres - which trains people in traditional trades plumbing, plastering, electrics and bricklaying - said it was receiving more than 1,000 calls each week from people wanting to go on a plumber training course. A report by the organisation found almost four out of five expected to work in a different career before they retired.

Almost two thirds of respondents (65.2%) to the nebusiness poll said they were not planning on radically changing their career in the near future.

But Jo Hand, of Jo Hand Recruitment in Middlesbrough, said there was increasing fluidity in the local labour market as people tried out different roles within their field of expertise.

She said: “It’s rare that I interview people who haven’t been made redundant at least once or twice. This sends out a clear message that in many industries, jobs aren’t for life. People are gaining more transferable skills as they move from job to job.”

Locally, business chiefs are also urging more people to take up engineering to help beat the skills shortage.
