Polar a clear winner for hospital job

A MIDDLESBROUGH specialist window fabricator is celebrating clinching its biggest contract - which is only 10 minutes from its factory.

Polar, based at Skippers Lane, is installing all the windows at the £80m St Luke’s Hospital redevelopment.

More than 1,100 windows will be required for the project, taking place close to the original hospital site in Marton Road, which is being redeveloped over three years.

The project is Polar’s biggest single contract and is worth £1.7m to the firm.

Polar will be installing windows and external doors at the site until March next year.

Polar has been working with main contractor Laing O'Rourke for three years, and produced prototypes of the specialist windows prior to installation as well as working on other public sector projects.

Polar managing director John Wilson said the contract win was exciting news for the company, and being local, had even more significance.

“All our staff are locally based, and Polar is 25 years old this year, so this win is fantastic news for us,” he said. “It is a great achievement.”

Polar carries out a significant numbers of refurbishments and new build projects for schools - more than 200 in the last year alone - as well as other public and private sector work in the region.

The St Luke’s project will see beds at the hospital increase from 254 to 312 with opening due in summer 2010.
