Conference aims to boost sales expertise

SOME of the UK’s top sales executives will share their experiences at the North East’s first major sales skills conference.

The event, launched by The Journal in association with Newcastle consultancy Weightman Associates, was organised amid growing concern at the lack of sales expertise in the region.

Founder of the Gosforth consultancy Tony Weightman said: “There is a dearth of sales people in the region and there is a real need for good sales training.

“When companies need sales training in this region they are going to Leeds and London. We have to try and improve the skills of our sales force. If we can do that, then we shall create jobs, improve the economy and attract more people and more business.”

The North East Sales Conference will bring together a host of speakers from sales-focused companies such as the region’s biggest law firm, Dickinson Dees, and Newcastle Building Society.

Catherine Argent joined Dickinson Dees LLP in June 2006 and since then has worked on a variety of disputes from straight forward contractual disputes, and professional negligence claims to complex commercial disputes.

She will host a session covering the basis elements of a contract – when it has been formed and who has capacity to contract on behalf of a company.

She will also cover the use of standard terms and conditions, with tips on insuring that they are incorporated into your contract, not the other party’s.

Where you are forced to accept another party’s terms, Catherine will advise on the terms to watch out for.

Formation of contracts – the necessary elements for a contract including contract and offer.

Capacity / authority to contract.

Non-binding arrangements.

Incorporation of terms, including use of standard terms.

Misrepresentation – can the sales pitch come back to bite you?

What clauses should you watch out for in the small print?

Common mistakes and tips

The event takes place at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on Thursday November 13. The price per person is £175 + VAT which includes full-day conference, morning coffee and pastries, three course lunch and afternoon refreshments.
