A66 upgrade nears end

ONE OF the most challenging projects ever undertaken by Stockton based consultants Faithful+Gould is drawing to a close on the A66.

The £11.6m Highways Agency safety improvement scheme, including a new bridge between Long Newton and Elton, was a major piece of engineering which involved lifting massive steel beams into place over night to avoid disruption to traffic.

Dennis Edwards, director at Faithful+Gould’s Stockton office said the work looked set to be completed ahead of time and within budget.

“This is a high profile scheme for our organisation as it will not only improve local journeys but dramatically improve safety which is paramount to road users.

“We are extremely proud to be associated with this project and look forward to seeing the finished result.

“This has been a challenging project for all parties involved as most of the work took place adjacent to a live carriageway. Construction of the bridge over the A66 was particularly demanding and weekend night time diversions were necessary when the steel bridge beams were lifted in to place.

“Fortunately, delays to A66 traffic has been kept to a minimum. Once completed, the project will greatly improve the safety of the road by removing the need for local traffic to use the A66 as well as providing a safer means of joining and leaving it via the new slip roads,” he said.

Faithful+Gould was appointed to the project by its parent company Atkins.
