Biomass plant hopes

THE company behind the proposed £400m biomass plant at Teesport said it was quietly optimistic that a planning application submitted this week would be approved.

MGT Power said it had already received positive feedback from businesses and residents.

Representing £30m per year to the local economy, the Tees Renewable Energy Plant will create about 600 construction jobs and 150 on-site roles, as well as 300-400 jobs each year for the local supply chain.

Chris Moore, director at MGT, said he was confident the project, which would go some way to helping the UK realise its renewable energy targets, would pass UK and EU laws governing air quality and noise control.

“Having said that, it’s not a done deal yet and there are steps to go through before work can begin,” he added.

Planners at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council will give their recommendations to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform by November 24. If the go-ahead is given early in 2009 the plant will be operational by 2012.
