Rental bargains for Boro students

STUDENTS IN Middlesbrough are enjoying the cheapest rents in the country, but accommodation may get tighter as independent landlords struggle to keep up with regulation.

A survey by the website accommodationforstudents.com said Middlesbrough was a bargain at an average of £40-£45 a week, while elsewhere rents had spiralled by nearly 20% to a high of £102.65 a week in London.

According to Mark Oates of Python Properties, one of a handful of specialist student accommodation firms which owns 160 properties in the town, Middlesbrough was not subject to the same pressures as other areas of the country where many landlords had exited the student market in favour of renting to young professionals who could no longer afford to get on the property ladder. Mr Oates said there was “no evidence” of that happening here, but he added: “A lot of smaller private landlords are finding it quite difficult now because of increased legislation. We’re looking to pick up properties from one-off landlords, especially in Gresham.”
