Going green seals double award win for firm

GREEN working practices by Teesside staff have helped earn delivery giant TNT a double win at a top awards ceremony.

The global company, which employs 250 staff at its Teesside and Durham depots, has brought in green measures from fuel-efficiency training for drivers to eco-friendly car incentives.

It recently bought the world’s largest fleet of electricity-powered cars - 100 UK vehicles at a cost of £7.5m.

The company picked up the coveted Environment and Training accolades at the Motor Transport Awards, the Oscars of the UK transport sector.

Teesside depot general manager Campbell Ferrier said: “We offer staff training to help them drive more efficiently and minimise routes wherever possible.

“The electric vehicles have been a huge hit with drivers because they don’t have gears and are easier to drive than traditional vans.

“A staff incentive scheme has also been introduced - if they trade in their diesel cars for a more eco-friendly model, they can receive a lump sum of up to £2,400.

“The difference these measures make to our business can amount to hundreds of thousands of pounds a week. This prestigious awards win is particularly satisfying because it confirms we are conducting our business in the right fashion.”

With fuel savings, the fleet of electric vans is due to pay for itself within three years. The vehicles can reach speeds of up to 60mph and have faster acceleration than many diesel models.
