Juice maker pips pioneer

TEESSIDE biomass pioneer Sembcorp has been pipped at the post in a major green awards ceremony by the cheeky juice maker Innocent.

The Wilton utilities firm was yesterday named runner-up in the 2008 Barclays Commercial Bank Green Leaders in Business Awards.

Last year, Sembcorp UK opened the first biomass power station of its kind in the UK at the Wilton International site.

The £64m plant uses sustainable sources of wood to generate enough electricity to power a small town and saves 200,000 tonnes of CO² a year.

Sembcorp said biomass technology was setting the agenda for the company’s future growth and it was now actively looking to model similar projects on the Wilton plant.

The company’s Wilton site will be featured in a limited edition book profiling all 12 finalists in the Barclays Green Leaders award.

The book will be sent to government heads and influential figures around the world to demonstrate how British business is leading the way in a green industry revolution.

Sembcorp’s corporate public relations manager, Terry Waldron, said: “This is a proud moment for Sembcorp and a great recognition of our team’s hard work.”
