Backing for energy from waste plants

BOSSES at recycling and waste management company SITA UK have backed a report that called for more energy from waste plants so council taxpayers avoid millions of pounds in fines.

Graham Ingleson, general manager for SITA Tees Valley, which operates the North-east’s only energy from waste plant at Haverton Hill, said the process was a safe and effective way of dealing with the country’s rubbish mountain. And he called on local authorities to invest more in energy from waste technology.

The report from the Audit Commission warned that if individual councils failed to meet targets to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste going into landfill - even if England as a whole met them - taxpayers faced fines of up to £2m.
