Tackling fuel poverty
ENERGY companies will be urged to do more to tackle the region’s growing problem of fuel poverty at a key event in the Tees Valley.
Politicians, energy experts, consumers and suppliers are being invited to the Fair Fuel Summit, being held in Darlington on October 29 and organised by Middlesbrough-based Fabrick Housing Group.
Recent figures show one in 10 North-east households is classed as living in fuel poverty - where more than 10% of income is spent on energy costs. It has the highest proportion in the country.
Paul Fiddaman, finance director for Fabrick Housing Group - which has 15,000 homes in the region - said: “This summer has seen some energy companies increasing their prices by up to 35% while at the same time announcing record profits.
“We have seen a big rise in the number of people reporting to us that they are really worried about how they are going to afford to heat their homes over the winter. This is why we have called this summit to bring together all parties to plan a strategy to help the poorest people in our communities.”
