Tees Valley firms make it to the top
THREE Tees Valley firms have been named in the Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 250 list of companies.
This year’s table, which ranks Britain’s biggest mid-market private companies by sales, includes Northallerton-based ice cream maker R&R Ice Cream, transport services provider Bulkhaul in Middlesbrough and electrical cable distributor, Cleveland Cable Company.
Together, the 250 companies generate 5% of GDP, account for 1.5% of Britain’s workforce, and have combined sales of £69bn - up by £11bn on the figure posted by last year’s table of firms.
R&R was a new entry at 82 after generating revenues of £298.7m last year, up by 21.6% on 2006. With bases in Germany, France and Poland, the company sells branded ice-creams and lollies including Strawberry Mivvis.
Global chemical haulage firm Bulkhaul, founded by majority shareholder and Middlesbrough Football Club chairman Steve Gibson, was down 22 places to 195 after generating sales of £196.3m in 2006.
Thirteen places behind Bulkhaul was Cleveland Cable Company, owned by brothers Alastair and Michael Powell, which posted sales of £191.7m in the year to April 30, 2007.
