Learning conference heads to Teesside

AS work-based learning moves to the core of the curriculum, Tees Valley will host its first Employer Engagement Conference next week.

Organised jointly by the Evening Gazette, Middlesbrough College, Hall Garth Community Arts College, Teesside University and training organisation A4E, the event will take place at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium on Thursday.

It will tackle issues thrown up for employers by the new 14-19 education agenda, which focuses on the introduction of diplomas - five of which are being piloted across the UK, including engineering at eight colleges locally.

The new qualifications have at their core work-based learning, which requires the support of employers.

Keynote speaker will be the Government’s 14-19 education chief Chris Tweedale. The conference will also involve workshops led by local firms, including Corus, to look at barriers to training, such as literacy and how to accommodate special needs in the workforce.

Schools, colleges, training providers, and businesses are all expected to attend.

Organisers are anxious to gather Tees Valley employers’ views on training in advance of the conference.
