Designers eager to take honours
ARCHITECTS from across the globe are queuing up to have a hand in the design of one of Teesside’s key regeneration sites.
More than 200 architectural firms, including some of the biggest names in contemporary design, have registered to take part in a design contest at the North Shore development in Stockton.
Developers Urban Splash and Muse Developments launched the Make Me a Home competition in September in conjunction with Building Design Magazine and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
Firms were invited to design a new type of family home for the £300m scheme which broke with convention and brought something new to suburban housing.
About 250 homes will eventually be built on the waterfront development, which has already seen £18m of investment.
Simon Gawthorpe, managing director at Urban Splash, said: “The industry hasn’t ever really moved away from the traditional family home – they’ve remained relatively unchanged in recent years.
“When we launched the competition, we asked that the designs were practical yet cutting-edge.”
Joe Docherty, chief executive of Tees Valley Regeneration said: “The sheer scale of interest in the competition shows a great respect throughout the industry for our developers, Urban Splash and Muse Developments, and a genuine confidence in the North Shore scheme.”
Shortlisted entries will be on public display in February and the winner will be announced later in the spring.
