Doors open at £2m Travelodge

TRAVELODGE has opened a new £2m hotel in Middlesbrough - the first in UK which sees the company team up with budget retailer Aldi.

The 55-bed hotel is on the site of the former North Riding Infirmary in Newport Road where Aldi opened its second branch in the town last week.

The hotel, Travelodge’s 353rd, has created 20 jobs.

In partnership with Aldi, the supermarket chain is the freeholder while Travelodge has taken out a long-term lease on the property.

Travelodge has plans to open two further developments - one in Newquay and another in the North-east, the location of which has yet to been announced.

Vice chairman of Middlesbrough Council, Cllr Ron Lowes, formally opened the new site yesterday.

Debbie Husband, northern regional director for Travelodge, said: “I am delighted that we have opened our first hotel in Middlesbrough and I expect it will not be our last.

“There is a desperate need for low-cost accommodation in Middlesbrough and our new hotel will help to meet this demand.”

More than 100 customers queued to be among the first to set foot in Aldi’s “concept store” last week.

The North Riding Infirmary was bulldozed two years ago despite interest from restorers and a major campaign to save it.
