Contract could bring 200 jobs to Teesside
A MULTI-MILLION pound Middle Eastern contract could provide work for up to 200 Teessiders.
Trevor Arnold, managing director of Balfour Beatty Management’s Middle East operation, said the company had secured a £300m contract to work on the development of the world’s largest single-site aluminium smelter.
EMAL (Emirates Aluminium) is building the development in the United Arab Emirates.
Teessider Mr Arnold, pictured, said the firm had secured project and construction management work to develop road infrastructure and administration buildings at the site.
“Around 1,200 staff will be needed,” he said. “About 1,000 will be construction workers which we will recruit locally overseas. But we will also need 200 professionals such as engineers, quantity surveyors and safety experts.”
Mr Arnold joined Balfour Beatty Management last year shortly after stepping down as managing director of K Home International of Thornaby where he drove multi-billion dollar development in Dubai.
He added: “We will be working closely with the Balfour Beatty Management team based at Middlesbrough.
“I’ve always recruited talented people from Teesside for overseas projects and I want the cream of jobs to be for the North East.”
