I’m backing contractors

THE Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority said he would continue to promote firms which had won contracts to supply the £9.3bn 2012 project, despite a ban on companies using the Games in their marketing materials.

Speaking to nebusiness during his visit to the Tees Valley yesterday, John Armitt said he was “frustrated” at the ruling by the Olympic Committee that only the headline sponsors - including Lloyds Bank, BT and EDF Energy - could bolster their brands by association with the 2012 Games.

“You can understand their argument in theory, but it’s difficult to accept in practice for many companies. The rules say they will not be able to say they are supplying London 2012. I feel their frustration, and I will continue to talk about the companies that are supplying - although I shouldn’t. We will take every opportunity to help companies get involved and tell everyone they are.”

Mr Arnitt said North-east companies had been generally slow at putting themselves forward, partly because they thought they stood no chance of competing against those closer to London. But he said exposing a company to tender opportunities through the CompeteFor portal, even if unsuccessful, could lead to future business opportunities.
