Green light for M&S expansion
Feb 27 2009 By Andrew Mernin
GATESHEAD Council has granted planning permission for plans to expand the Marks and Spencer store at the MetroCentre, in a move which will create 60 new jobs.
The proposal, which will involve re-modelling of the exterior of the store, was given the go-ahead by members of Gateshead Council's planning and development committee this week.
The proposed alterations will create new modern glass frontages for the store, a new entrance and some additional floor space for the sale of home ware goods and hospitality areas. It is understood that up to 60 new jobs will be created as a result of the building's limited expansion.
Permission was granted subject to a legal agreement requiring Marks and Spencer to make a financial contribution to support sustainable transport initiatives in and around the MetroCentre.
The decision was taken by Gateshead's Planning and Development Committee at their meeting at Gateshead Civic Centre on Wednesday.
