Rig plan ‘good case’
THE company behind the stalled Sea- Dragon project is giving “serious” consideration to a bid by a newly-formed alliance to keep the work in the North East.
The scheme to build at least one giant drilling rig at Haverton Hill shipyard had looked in doubt after Cayman Islands-based SeaDragon Offshore Ltd had terminated its contract with Tees Alliance Group (TAG), the cluster of companies due to carry out the work.
Now a new partnership between Darlington-based Cleveland Bridge and McNulty Offshore Construction Limited - Tyne Tees Rigs - is bidding to stop the work from going to Singapore.
If the attempt is successful, it could safeguard hundreds of local jobs and generate millions of pounds for the local supply chain.
A spokesperson for SeaDragon said: “They made what seems to be a serious proposal. We are examining it.”
A Cleveland Bridge spokesperson said: “We had an opportunity to fully present our case.
“It was a good and very encouraging meeting.”
