Recession-beating plan is developed

AN economic task force has come up with a 10-point action plan to help Northumberland beat the recession.

Dozens of new apprenticeships for young people, concerted efforts to boost businesses by buying local, support for tackling poverty and a drive to pay bills quicker are among the package of measures proposed by the county’s new unitary council.

The all-party task force – which was championed by Blyth Valley Labour MP Ronnie Campbell – was launched in November in a bid to counter the effects on employment, incomes, business and quality of life caused by the deepening economic slump.

It has met six times and taken evidence from organisations such as regional development agency One North East, Business Enterprise North East, the region’s Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Small Businesses and Northumberland Tourism.
