Branch out using wood
HAILING wood as a renewable fuel of the future, the UK’s first wood fuel expo, Ignition09, got under way at The Sage Gateshead yesterday.
The two-day event aims to show businesses and organisations how they can become more efficient financially and environmentally by using wood fuel.
There are 250,000 acres of woodland in the North-east but around a quarter is unmanaged. This quarter adds up to a potential resource of around 100,000 tonnes of timber a year.
Ed Miliband, Minister for Energy and Climate Change, said: “Biomass has an important role in helping the UK achieve its renewable energy targets and reducing carbon emissions.
