MSV flagship powers down

A TEES Valley electrical retailer has closed its doors just months after relocating to a flagship site in Middlesbrough’s Linthorpe Road.

Staff confirmed MSV, which sells hi-tech visual and audio equipment, was no longer open for business. Chairman Shab Mehdi could not be contacted for comment.

Mr Mehdi, who is well known as a sponsor of local sporting organisations, also owns Indian restaurant and takeaway Sweet Chilli, which continues to trade in the town centre.

MSV electrical store was opened in a fanfare of publicity by Boro stars Tuncay Sanli and Julio Arca. The store had a team of five staff, some of whom had been working for the company for 30 years.

Founded in 1994, the business was formerly located on Portrack Lane in Stockton and was born out of Boro Electronics, established by the Mehdi family in Middlesbrough in 1975.

The economic downturn has hit UK electrical goods retailers particularly hard, sparking a wave of redundancies and business failures.

In January Leeds-based Empire Direct went into administration, with the loss of 158 jobs.

Electrical goods manufacturer Hoover announced it was ceasing production at its Merthyr Tydfil plant in Wales.
