Offshore industries withstand recession, says expert

TEES Valley’s burgeoning sub-sea, offshore and oil and gas industries are withstanding the worst of recession, according to a local recruitment boss.

Steve Guest, pictured, managing director of Wilton-based TechConsult UK, says firms are looking to retain high-value skills rather than slash costs in the wake of a fierce economic downturn.

“We are still seeing pockets of activity, particularly in sub-sea work”, he said. “When things pick up again companies need good, skilled people to take their business forward.”

TechConsult UK saw turnover more than double to nearly £2m in 2008 and expects similar growth this year, despite seeing a slight dip in recruitment activity.

The company recently won a new contract to supply workers to North Yorkshire firm Pipeline Engineering, which is working on the £3m Nord Stream gas pipeline project linking Russia and the European Union via the Baltic Sea.

The pipeline will transport up to 55bn cubic metres of natural gas each year - enough to supply more than 25m households.

TechConsult UK is a preferred supplier for at least eight firms including sub-sea specialists Technip and Darlington-based CTC Marine.
