Thistle’s eco warriors grasp nettle
A TEESSIDE hotel has secured a top eco award in recognition of its green credentials.
Thistle Middlesbrough, which has recently undergone a £1m revamp including refurbishment of bedrooms and investment in conferencing space, has been awarded a silver award by the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) for its commitment to the environment.
The hotel is the first in Middlesbrough to receive a GTBS award for its environmental conscience and is one of only seven hotels in the North-east to be recognised by the scheme.
The direction came from the top when general manager Peter Llewellyn along with his team of eco warriors signed a pledge agreeing to work towards a greener company.
Mr Llewellyn said: “More and more businesses are requesting green credentials when looking to book a venue. The GTBS award is the culmination of all our hard efforts.”
Green initiatives at the hotel, which employs 100 staff, include recycling materials such as glass, cardboard, oil and paper. All its rooms use energy efficient light bulbs and special shower heads save on water consumption.
