Work starts at windfarm
A DARLINGTON company has started cabling work on a major offshore wind farm.
CTC Marine Projects won the seven-figure contract with E.ON Climate and Renewables UK for the massive 60-turbine Robin Rigg farm, one of the largest planned for the UK, in the Solway Firth, between Cumbria and Dumfries.
The trenching and installation company, which has built up a portfolio in the oil and gas industry, will lay, install and bury 17 subsea power cables for the 180 megawatt project. The company, which also has offices in Singapore, employs 111 staff in Darlington and more than 200 worldwide.
Bosses said they were hoping the contract will lead to more work in the UK’s growing offshore wind sector.
CTC managing director, Daryl Lynch, said CTC had already established a successful track record working for E.ON.
“This contract shows the strength of our subsea services and protection business, which made us the obvious contractor choice for this offshore wind farm project,” he said. “It highlights CTC's ability to apply our extensive subsea experience in the oil and gas industry to the offshore wind farm market and shows the breadth of services and technology that CTC can offer.”
CTC’s installations will form only part of the cabling system for the massive wind farm, which is being built 9km offshore.
Once operational, the wind farm will generate enough electricity to power 117,000 homes a year and displace the emission of more than 200,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases.
