Helping businesses keep track of carbon footprint

TWO brothers have set up a new business which allows companies to keep track of their carbon footprint as well as keeping down costs.

David and Andrew Evans have set up Carbonbiz in Bishop Auckland and they aim to build a £1.4m turnover firm within three years with the help of their innovative software which analyses carbon use.

It is designed to help managers manage their carbon emissions as well as identify how to cut it and reduce their operational costs.

The brothers, who have been involved in the supply chain software and marketing industries for years, say their business success will be fuelled by carbon trading regulations which are due to come into force in 2010.

The regulations are part of the Government’s Climate Change Bill and will see businesses buy allowances for the amount of carbon they emit every year to help cut carbon dioxide emissions by four million tonnes a year.

As well as a dedicated technical support team in Australia, the brothers are looking to employ five people in Bishop Auckland.

Andrew Evans, Carbonbiz marketing director, said: “Carbon management is fast becoming a key issue across all industry sectors. When the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) becomes law next April, it will be mandatory for many large organisations to report on and reduce their CO2 emissions. Businesses need to be aware of the scale of planning needed to track their carbon output and should be preparing now.”

The firm, which counts the Royal Albert Hall and Science Museum as two of its clients, plans to work more closely with another data capture specialist in order to develop technology that can measure emissions on site.

Mr Evans said: “Companies need to have accurate data on their carbon footprint to ensure compliance with the new legislation both in the UK and abroad, but tend to underestimate the time, resources and scale of planning needed to track this.”
