THE game that gives players the chance to find out if they could make a profit by investing £100,000 on the stock market is back.

And more than 100 players had signed up to compete in the Taking Stock game on The Journal’s business website nebusiness.co.uk within hours of the launch of the second game when the London Stock Market started trading yesterday morning.

Armed with a virtual £100,000 to invest, would-be traders can bet on real share prices and build up portfolios over the next two months.

They will not only get the chance to prove their skills as traders, without the risk of losing any money, but also compete against their workmates and form leagues to pit their skills against rival teams across the North East.

And if they can really make their virtual stock portfolio multiply, then they will be in with a chance of winning a very real prize.

The top performing player when this game finishes on August 21 will get a luxury stay at Seaham Hall Hotel and £500 in cash, courtesy of its main sponsor, the investment management company Brewin Dolphin.

The game featured exclusively on the nebusiness.co.uk website, and created by Newcastle technology firm Scott Logic, was given the seal of approval by the boss of Brewin Dolphin.

Jamie Matheson, executive chairman of the Brewin Dolphin Group, was shown how to play when he visited the company’s Newcastle office and its 300 staff yesterday. He said it was a great way for beginners to stock market speculation to learn the ropes.

“This is a really fun game and a good introduction to the stock market. I always say you are never too small or too young to take an interest in equity markets,” said Mr Matheson.

With more players signing up all the time, and you can sign up to play until two weeks before the game ends, Taking Stock’s second game looks to be just as successful as the first when 700 players took part.

Last time John Bottomley, who runs the Bathroom Studio in Birtley, Gateshead, and played the game under the trading name of White Van Man, won a luxury stay at Matfen Hall and £500 in cash after turning his initial £100,000 virtual stake into more than £800,000. We will publish regular updates on the game in The Journal’s business section and you can constantly monitor your performance by logging on to the game via nebusiness.co.uk

Large, medium and the North 40 companies are all in the game waiting for your investment and you can even pinpoint exactly where to put your money through a wealth of analysis tools and graphs.

Prices are based on live prices with a 15-minute delay.
