Helping hand for young entrepreneurs

ENTREPRENEURS of the future are being given the opportunity to run their own business from concept to trading.

The Berwick WorkSpace business centre has teamed up with the town’s Community High School to put together the programme for 17- and 18-year-old business studies students.

Pupils met staff from the centre yesterday for an initial session to encourage them to start thinking about business ideas over the summer holidays.

The actual initiative will run from September until April, with a structured programme starting with a Be Your Own Boss workshop, through business planning to growth and development help, and presentations to a team of ‘dragons’ from the centre.

Students taking part will receive a business starter grant of £50 and £100 of business support vouchers, which they can use to buy in specialist help such as technical or marketing support from other organisations.

Teams will compete throughout to win the WorkSpace Challenge award for enterprise, which will be presented at an enterprise celebration event next spring.

WorkSpace manager Andrew Martin said: "This is something we are very proud to have initiated, as it will allow these young entrepreneurs the opportunity to experience running a business while interacting with the support services offered through the WorkSpace to new businesses."
