FOOD price inflation fell to its lowest level for more than a year and a half in July, figures revealed today. Food prices rose by 3.8%, down from a 5.6% increase in June, marking the fourth month of falling inflation in a row, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC)-Nielsen Shop Price Index. A supermarket price war and a sharp fall in commodity prices contributed to the fall. Yesterday, major retailers warned that calls by the Competition Commission for a supermarket ombudsman at a cost of £5m a year could signal the end of cheap food. Read
