Pearson is moving on up in slump

A TEES VALLEY international removals firm said it was benefiting from recession as fat severance and bonus packages in the European financial services sector were spent moving home.

Frances Reed, director of Pearson at Riverside Park, Middlesbrough, part of UniGroup Worldwide UTS, said: “If anything, our 2008 turnover was higher than in 2007 and 2009 is higher than 2008.

“A lot of people in the banking and finance houses are spending bonuses as well as people who have been made redundant. The recession has brought growth for us.”

The company, which has taken on 10 additional staff in the past four months and added five trucks and four trailers to its fleet, said it was looking to expand further through acquisition next year.

“We haven’t got our eye on anyone in particular, but it won’t necessarily be in this country,” said Mrs Reed.

The company built its reputation on contracts with the Ministry of Defence, moving soldiers’ families between billets in the UK and overseas.
