Taxi boss in the fast lane

TAXI entrepreneur Mohammed Bashir has expanded his business after acquiring a new site in Thornaby.

The new premises, based on the site of the former Supreme Knitwear Factory, is expected to become the base for up to 150 drivers and control staff as well as a repair centre open to the public.

Mr Bashir’s firm, Middlesbrough Borough Cars (MBC), acquired the one-acre site after winning backing from Yorkshire Bank’s Tees Valley Financial Solutions Centre (FSC) in Stockton.

The move represents the next stage of the company’s growth following a string of recent acquisitions.

In the last two years MBC has snapped up four local businesses including JPM Taxis in Eston; T&J Taxis in South Bank, Middlesbrough’s Cleveland Cars and Thornaby-based Mandale Taxis.

Mr Bashir, who launched the company in 1986 with his two brothers - who have since left the business - said: “I never in a million years would have dreamed I would be heading a business of this size when my brothers and I launched this venture 23 years ago.

“This new base in Stockton enables us to further improve our services and reduce response times in Tees Valley as we continue to expand.”

The company’s £3m headquarters on Cargo Fleet Lane, Middlesbrough, is the base for more than 600 drivers, control staff and management operating in a 20-mile radius of Middlesbrough.

Facilities at the eight-acre site also include a newly-built MOT test centre, as well as a gymnasium and snooker lounge for the drivers.
