A CONSORTIUM led by the biggest shareholder in National Express today said it had withdrawn its £765m offer for the struggling transport group, which is being stripped of its East Coast main line franchise by the government. The line will pass back into public ownership by the end of the year. Spain’s Cosmen family, which owns 18.5% of the firm, had been working with CVC on a potential deal since July. Now it says it will support plans for National Express to strengthen its £1bn debt-laden finances by raising cash from shareholders. The firm said it was is in talks with major shareholders over fundraising to give the group a “strong, stable platform”. This month it emerged that the woman appointed by Transport Secretary Lord Adonis to oversee the East Coast Main Line handover and run the franchise during the 12 to 15 months it is expected to take to find another private operator, would earn more than the Prime Minister.
