A BOOM in the fireworks market has sparked a second venture for a Tees Valley packaging company.
Billingham company Magnum Packaging has opened Magnum Fireworks on Middlesbrough’s Newport Road, and will use its imports know-how to sell wholesale to retailers across the UK.
Sales of fireworks are rocketing - and not just at this time of year.
As well as Bonfire Night, demand for fireworks is also being driven by celebrations and major cultural events such as Diwali. Magnum Packaging director Tariq Bilal said he plans to open several other shops in the North-east.
“There aren’t many importers because you need various licences for storing, importing and all-year-round operation and they’re not easy to get,” he said. “We already had the storage space and we know how importing works.”
Haffan Younis, Magnum Packaging purchasing manager, said: “Most fireworks are sold at this time of year, but now people want them all year round for birthdays, parties, weddings, even Chinese New Year and Eid. They’re far more popular than they were before.”
