Bay’s food for thought

THE Bay Horse at Hurworth is celebrating after being named one of the top 30 gastro pubs of 2009 by a leading industry journal after just a year of business.

The venue says it is the only pub in the North-east to be featured in the line-up, compiled by The Morning Advertiser - a weekly publication for the licensed industry.

This is the third accolade for the pub in four weeks as it was also awarded a feature in Michelin Eating Out in Pubs guide 2010 and Sawday Pubs & Inns Edition 7 - to be published next year.

The Bay Horse, a Grade II coaching house dating back to the 1400s, has traded under new ownership for 12 months after business partners Marcus Bennett and Jonathan Hall bought it last year.

Since then they have invested £250,000 in the business including a brand new state-of-the-art kitchen.

“We are so pleased to have been recognised for these awards,” said Mr Bennett.

“We pride ourselves on using the best quality ingredients and local produce including Grand Reserve beef from a farm just two miles away.”

Mr Hall added: “The entry in to the Michelin Guide is the first for any pub in Darlington receiving an ‘inspectors favourite’ approval.

“We are especially pleased to have won the award after only a year in business.”

Mr Bennett and Mr Hall both have extensive experience in the food industry - Mr Bennett was previously head chef/proprietor at McCoys @ The Baltic in Newcastle and head chef at The Tontine near Stokesley.

This month The Bay Horse will be opening a second private dining room, called The Seagraves Room.
