Retailers set up shop at The Mall

TWO retailers have opened up bases at The Mall in Middlesbrough ahead of the festive trading rush.

Milkshake specialist Shakeaholic and fashion firm Lemon Accessories UK have each signed minimum 12-month leases for units at the centre, which has nudged occupancy levels up to the 80%-90% mark. Shakeaholic creates made-to-order milkshakes from more than 175 flavours of chocolate bars, biscuits and sweets. Founded by Ian and Steve Philpott, the company has started trading in Middlesbrough and has outlets in Newcastle, York, Leeds, Durham and Gateshead’s MetroCentre.

Meanwhile Lemon Accessories has also open for business at the centre. It has other outlets in Morpeth and Newcastle, selling handbags, jewellery and accessories.

David McNee, general manager of The Mall, said: “These are businesses that are expanding at the moment. They have chosen Middlesbrough as a market that can work for them.” Although footfall at The Mall has dipped by around 4% in 2009, Mr McNee said he had seen recent signs of improvement as confidence returned and bargain-hunters geared up for Christmas trading.
