Former Minister Jack Cunningham spearheads war on waste in North East

JACK Cunningham was born in Newcastle and grew up in Felling in Gateshead.
He attended Jarrow Grammar School and studied for a PhD in chemistry at Durham University.
Now living between Riding Mill and Stocksfield in Northumberland, he was made a peer for life after standing down from the House of Commons at the General Election of May 2005.
First elected as an MP in 1970, he had represented the Cumbrian constituency of Copeland for 35 years.
Lord Cunningham has held a number of ministerial posts, including Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 1997.
In 1998 he was appointed Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
He is married and has one son and two daughters. His leisure interests include gardening, the theatre, fell walking, music, fly fishing and Newcastle United .
